Mohit and I were completing our MBAs at the Schulich School of Business in Toronto and first met at an off-site school event in Collingwood. That night, we talked for hours while sitting on the beach over-looking the lake, next to a blazing bond fire. The night sky was perfectly clear; we could see the Northern Lights from the beach. That was the first time either of us had seen the Lights and we took it as a sign of things to come. Two and a half years later, on my birthday, Mohit took me back to that same place. Blindfolded with an umbrella in hand he asked me to follow the sound of his voice. When I opened the blindfold he was on both knees with arms wide open in the pouring rain and simply said..."marry me".
Both of us are Type A personalities and aim for perfection. This made for a very interesting year of wedding planning! We wanted everything to be just right for our big day and our 350 guests who travelled from all over the world. We planned a traditional Hindu wedding which included five days of festivities. It started with a Mehendi evening at my parent's house where all the women closest to me applied Henna to their hands—a symbol of love & a long married life. The second day we hosted a Sangeet-a musical evening laced with traditional Indian song & dance.
The highlight of our wedding day was having all our loved ones intimately participate in the ceremony. My father, sister and cousins sang melodious tunes while my maternal Uncles walked me down the aisle. As per Hindu tradition, my parents gave me away in an emotional custom where the parents lovingly place the bride's hands into the grooms. As I walked down the aisle, Mohit says he remembered thinking: "I can't wait to spend the rest of my life with you".
We held our reception the day after the wedding. Since my family is from the Caribbean we chose colourful tropical flowers and hired Brazilian Capoeira and Samba dancers. They had everyone on their feet in no time and brought to life the Caribbean flare!
We knew Maggie would be our photographer as soon as we met her. She's brilliant, her work is poetic and she has a great passion for what she does. She photographed every detail of our wedding—her pictures truly tell the story of the love we feel for each other and our families. We're so grateful to have met Maggie and will always cherish the memories she helped us beautifully capture of our wedding.
